Author/Playwright Emmet Rensin writing clearly about craving, please read!

Below is the link to an essay by a professional writer who is oh-so-much-more eloquent and concise in his description of the experience of craving and choice in the life of an addict in recovery. I think he nailed it.

  1. For the past 40 years, when given the opportunity, I ask those who have relapsed if they asked the God of their understanding for help on the day they slipped. So far they have all said no. That’s a good place to start if you wish to gain a sustained recovery. Without that Power, you’re screwed.

I have no information on Hoffman’s rehab experience, but if they did not stress the importance of developing a relationship with a Higher Power he got shafted. We lost an extraordinary talent and my sympathy to his family.

  3. I have written a play, about a childhood friend of mine, who suffers from poly substance addictions; she has been an addict to heroin, alcohol, meth, and cocaine. I disagree on a part of what this playwright says, although I appreciate his viewpoint. IF WHAT HAS BEEN SAID WAS TRUE, then HOFFMAN NEVER COULD HAVE RECOVERED, as HE ONCE DID. Nor, could he have stopped using heroin since the first time he used it. Having witnessed so many great talents die from Smack, (I witnessed Micheal Bloomfiield nodding out during a performance, knocking the mike off the mike stand, and causing his hair to short out the microphone and his hair catch on fire!) I feel that THE NEUROLOGICAL COMPONANT IS VERY, VERY REAL. But it is not the whole story. I HAVE WRITTEN A PAPER ABOUT MARGARET MAHLERS deveopmental stages of infancy , and THE FIVE COPING SKILLS YOUNG CHILDREN USE WHEN SEPERATED FROM THE PARENTS: and how these contribute: to POSSIBLE DRUG RE-INACTMENTS LATER IN LIFE.

One of these is “disorientation”–Some children will spin around, bend over and jump up high, etc…. I feel that MUCH ADDICTION IS REINACMENT of BEHAVIORS OF SAFETY , FEELINGS OF SAFETY, created during times of anxiety or seperation anxiety. The fact that Hoffman had recently seperated from his wife, would bear this out!

Drug addiction, as a coping mechanism for anxiety and its relief, has developmental (early environment) causes, organic (inherited gene and brain development) causes, behavioral stressors and responses to stress (counter distress to eustress), and things “we haven’t even had access to yet!”

An integrated method is required: If we videotaped young children, facing their FIRST ENCOUNTERS WITH TERROR (seperation anxiety at ages 4-7) and noted their unconscious coping skills, we could FAR MORE EASILY notice those children at risk OF DEVELOPING ADDICTIONS!

I applaud my fellow playwrights’ efforts to INCREASE AN ATTITUDE OF FORGIVENESS, OF EMPATHY AND OF INCREASING AWARENESS AS TO THE CAUSES, ETIOLOGY AND PROGRESSION OF DRUG ADDICTION. IF WE HAD AN ENLIGHTENED EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM, CAPABLE OF POINTING OUT AT RISK CHILDREN, perhaps things would be different.

If we don’t pay the price as a society early in their lives, to care and note at risk children, we pay a far higher price later on. Unfortunately, Phillip S. Hoffman paid it. How many others must follow?
